Early in 2016 there was serious concern about the water quality of the Navesink, and out of an abundance of caution, NMHA cancelled the summer program. During that summer a number of organizations (Clean Ocean Action, Rutgers, the DPA, and others) did extensive research and set out the following: 1. Pollution was caused mainly by run-off from surface drains after rain storms. 2. As the Navesink is a tidal estuary, within 24 hours the tides have swept away the pollution. This enabled NMHA to restart the River Rangers program for 2017 as the daily program will avoid those locations that are polluted after a rainstorm (of course, if lightning is forecast, the River Rangers get to land immediately. River Rangers participate in a land-based program for the duration of the lightning period/forecast.
