Fall Speaker Event - VISIT THE ICONIC CHURCH OF THE PRESIDENTS
Wednesday, October 21, 2020, at 7:15 pm
On-Line

Jim Foley, Borough of Deal Historian and President of the Long Branch Historical Museum Association Board of Trustees will present a ZOOM meeting on Wednesday,. October, 21st to members and guests of the Township of Ocean Historical Museum.  He will walk us through the history of the St. James Chapel (Church of the Presidents) which was constructed in 1879 and is located in the Elberon section of Long Branch. In addition to discussing the seven presidents who worshipped there, Jim will talk about the "Summer Capital" during our nation's Gilded Age and the role Edgar Dinkelspiel played in saving this National Treasure from the wrecking ball.

Sadly, Frank D'Esposito, a great friend and supporter of the Museum, passed away last week.  We remember Frank with the Hometown Histories video he made with his brother in 2018.  Our thoughts go out to his family and friends.  More.
A confluence of misfortunes added up to tragedy for the Morro Castle. The liner was on its 174th return trip from Havana to New York when its captain died mysteriously. That same night, a fire of suspicious origin broke out on board.  The acting captain delayed signaling for help, thinking at first he could make it to New York. An oncoming Nor’easter fanned the flames. By 3 a.m. the ship--whose design and materials contributed to the fire’s spread--was ablaze.  They were six miles off Sea Girt. Launch of the lifeboats was hampered by fire. Just 6 made it to shore, carrying only 85 people--80 of whom were crew members! Panicked passengers, who had received no lifesaving instruction, jumped into the sea.  Nearby ships sped to pick up survivors. More.

Historic Happenings Blog Shut Down

Sadly, changes by Google to their system have caused our Historic Happenings Blog to be shut down.  Google has decided that posts scheduled in the future will no longer be shown on their Blogger/Blogspot site until that date and time arrives.  Posts that already exist in the future exist and will remain posted on our blog. We just cannot add to it.

We are looking for a new home for the blog and will let you know when one is found.  Anyone who has an idea where to post events, please let us know, as your ideas are always welcome.
