2017-10-08 - Flea Market to Save the "Stucile Farms Water Tower"

http://www.oceanmuseum.org/2017-10-08-FleaMarket.html
"Save The Water Tower" Flea Market
Sunday, October 8, 2017, 9:00 am to 3:00 pm
Rain Date - October 15, 2017, 9:00 am to 3:00 pm
Grounds of the Stucile Farms Water Tower,
703 Deal Road, Ocean, NJ 07712
Ocean Township Museum to hold a “Save the Tower” Flea Market

The Ocean Township Historical Museum, located in the Eden Woolley House in front of the Ocean Library at 703 Deal Road in Ocean, is hosting an Outdoor Antique and Flea Market on parkland behind the museum, 9 to 3, Sunday, October 8 (rain date, Sunday October 15). The event takes place—appropriately enough—in the shadow of the handsome tower on the site that the museum is working to save. All proceeds from the market go to the restoration effort.

The market organizers are now accepting applications (downloadable from the website oceanmuseum.com) from food vendors and organizations or individuals offering antiques, arts and crafts, and vintage, re-purposed, home décor, and flea market items. The fee for a 10’x10’ space is $35 for merchandise vendors and $70 for food providers. Deadline for applications is Friday, September 22.

Event chair Brenda Wityk explained the purpose of the event. “We want to create a fun and productive day for everyone involved—visitors, shoppers, and vendors. It’s an ideal location for what we have in mind: parkland situated behind the museum and next to the library with off-street parking, activities for children, tours of the museum and tower, and a surrounding woodland that will be alive with fall colors.”

The museum association has an impressive track record saving structures. It rescued the 18th century (in its oldest part) Eden Woolley House, moved from the corner of Route 35 and Deal Road, restored, and opened to the public in 2009. Now, they’ve tackled saving the handsome tower behind the Woolley House. The tower was built in the early 20th century to hide a water tank that supplied the farm on which it stood. Its iconic façade, reminiscent of a New England lighthouse, has become a local landmark. To date, the structure has been stabilized and painted. Work remains to complete the renovation and open the tower to the public as an adjunct to the museum.

2017-08-23 - Latest Update to YouTube - When Wayside Was Farmland

https://youtu.be/dygSSkWOU-k
At one time, most of New Jersey was farms (that is where the name the “Garden State” comes from). As late as the 1960's if you lived west of Route 35 in Ocean Township, your family was involved in farming.

Dave Osborn and his sister Mary are from a Wayside farming family that goes back generations. Dave may have been an Ocean Township Police officer, but he still farmed the families land in western Ocean.

Dave and Mary sit down with our Hometown Histories crew to discuss farming in Ocean Township and the many families who once worked the land to make a living.

Marge Edelson, Museum Trustee is the host of this episode. Dallas Grove is Executive Producer; Produced by Ted Dellinger and Joe Bove; Music is by Bill Madden.

The Township of Ocean Historical Museum is a 501(c)(3) charity, and a 100% volunteer organization, that tells the story of Coastal Monmouth County, New Jersey, USA.

Funding for Hometown Histories was provided by the New Jersey Cultural Trust.
